WE WILL ROCK YOU
A student showcase
FRIDAY 29TH FEBRUARY & SATURDAY 1ST MARCH 2008
“Wicked” was the first student showcase, produced directed and arranged solely by Kelsey and Clara. The Wicked Showcase was outstanding so who thought they could out do themselves? Well they have in their “We Will Rock You” Student Showcase, with a larger cast, more musical arrangements and extra dance numbers!
All cast opened the show with a different version of “Radio Gaga”, cleverly and effectively choreographed and superbly sung. Galileo Figaro, a social outcast and Messiah figure for the Bohemians, and played by Tim, sings of his need to rediscover rock and roll and get out of the monotony of Planet Mall in “I Want to Break Free”. Tim did a brilliant job of showing how passionate his character was about escaping the control of the Killer Queen.
Scaramouche, played by Tiff, shares the same ideals as Galileo. She too is a Bohemian and dreams of once again expressing freedom of thought and fashion “I Want to Break Free”. Tiff showed us all, once again, her amazing vocal talents in “Somebody to Love” with Gaga girls, Roberta, Natalie, Ashley and Elle, verbally tearing Scaramouche apart with their dripping sarcasm.
At this point in the story we get our first look at the infamous Killer Queen, played by Claire. Killer Queen’s evil dictatorship is aided by Khashoggi, her commander of secret police, played by Greg.
Tim and Tiff performed their first of many outstanding duets in the show, “Under Pressure”. They worked really well together on stage as Galileo and Scaramouche begin to discover their love interest in one another. Yasmin and Terry, playing Meat and Britney also delivered a duet, “I Want It All”, and were accompanied by their bohemian backing dancers.
Tiff and Tim’s acting scenes were as good as their duets, the humorous sexual tension surrounding the “fandango” . . . and comical dancing from Tim kept the audience laughing! Galileo and Scaramouche meet Britney and Meat, who tell them they can join the brightly dressed Bohemians (Sally, Claire, Maddie, Jasmin, Elliot, Jasmin and Cos) and experience live music and rock and roll again! This leads Meat, Britney, Scaramouche and Galileo to lead the cast in powerful performance of “Headlong”.
Another powerful performance opened the second act with Claire and Yasmin singing “No One But You”. It was an emotional song and lent itself well to the beautiful lyrical dance performed by Daisie.
“Who Wants to Live Forever” performed by Tiff and Tim was one of the major highlights of the show. The vocal technique was again outstanding but what really gave the song true brilliance was the passion they put into the song. The students evoked real emotion from the audience who were captivated throughout.
As the story continued Galileo and Scaramouche flee whilst their fellow Bohemians are captured and brain stormed by Khashoggi and the Globalsoft workers (Jack and Elliot). Killer Queen is ecstatic by the capture of more Bohemians and feeling as though she is a on a roll sings “Don’t Stop Me Now”. Claire really got into the part of Killer Queen and looked like she was “having a good time”!
Tiff and Tim performed another good duet in “Hammer to Fall” and Terry delivered a well rehearsed solo, “The Days of Our Lives” as Pop the hippie-ish Bohemian who remembers the days of rock and roll and shows Galileo, Scaramouche and the Bohemians a Queen recording he has. They realise how rock and roll should be and head for the legendary Wembley Stadium, venue to Queen concerts.
Galileo starts off the title song acapella and leads the whole cast into a rendition of “We Will Rock You”. They hear the beat of rock and roll again and rediscover the freedom of expression through music.
The finale “Bohemian Rhapsody”, possibly one of the greatest Queen songs of all time, was done justice by all cast. They rounded off the show with a well harmonised version of the song and solos from Tim, Tiff, Yasmin, Terry and Claire.
Once again Kelsey and Clara have pulled off an outstanding show all on their own. They selected the cast, arranged musical numbers and rehearsals, choreographed and directed, picked lighting, organised technical staff and stage managed the show!! We all look forward to the next one from the partnership as they keep getting better and better. Well done to Kelsey and Clara! |
